How-To Guides about Apple

Continuity isn't one setting tucked into a menu. iOS, iPadOS, and macOS bundle nearly a dozen distinct tools under that name, everything from AirDrop and Handoff to lesser-known features like Continuity Sketch and Instant Hotspot (Apple Support, earlier this year). Knowing how to use Apple Continuity well means matching the right feature to the right task, not switching everything on and hoping it sorts itself out.

For years, every iMessage conversation looked the same: the standard plain Messages backdrop, no matter who you were talking to. That changed when Apple shipped iOS 26, which lets you swap that plain canvas for a photo, a solid color, an animated preset, or an AI-generated image. Learning how to change the background on iPhone Messages takes about thirty seconds once you know where to look, but the feature works differently than most people expect. It isn't a personal theme sitting quietly on...

Apple's macOS 27 Golden Gate update lets Mac owners route a question, and related follow-ups, to ChatGPT instead of the new Siri AI, but there's no switch that makes the swap permanent. Here's how to use ChatGPT with Siri on Mac: turn on the ChatGPT extension once in System Settings, then ask for ChatGPT by name every time you want it instead of Siri AI, since every new query defaults back to Siri AI otherwise.

Downloading a map to an iPhone before a hike doesn't guarantee it will still work once the signal drops. Gaia GPS's own support documentation warns that its app caches recently viewed tiles, so a trail can look available offline even though it was never actually downloaded. That's a quirk specific to how Gaia checks download status, not proof that offline map apps generally fail.

AppleInsider deleted Apple Intelligence's model folder on a test Mac last week and watched the Storage pane's AI figure drop from 27.59GB to 3.07GB, a 24.52GB swing. Available disk space only grew by about 14GB (AppleInsider). That gap matters before anyone touches anything: a Storage-pane number, a folder's measured size, and actual free space are three different things, and no method in this guide can promise an exact number back.

iOS 27 merges Siri and Spotlight into a single search interface, and by default the redesigned assistant now digs through Messages, Notes, and email to answer questions with more personal context. That's exactly why learning how to limit Siri access to personal data matters the moment you update: the same indexing that made Siri "much improved" in beta testing also means far more of what's on your phone is now readable by an AI system.

GPTK 4 and CrossOver are making some modern Windows titles genuinely playable on Apple Silicon, which sounds like great news if you're trying to play Windows games on an M5 Max Mac Studio you already own, or one you're thinking about buying. Before installing anything, know this: the most detailed benchmark report behind this guide tested a 40-core GPU, 48GB M5 Max MacBook Pro, not the base M5 Max Mac Studio, which has an 18-core CPU, a 32-core GPU, and 36GB of unified memory. Apple also offers...

Apple HomeView ships without an on-device app store. Third-party apps only show up when the display recognizes you and detects a paired iPhone or iPad that's been unlocked recently, a setup MacRumors compares to CarPlay. Apple confirms HomeView supports compatible third-party audio and video apps, but it hasn't published a HomeView-specific compatibility checklist. Checking your iPhone's CarPlay apps may help identify candidates, though it won't confirm which apps HomeView supports.

Apple CarPlay not working is rarely about a bad cable or spotty Wi-Fi, not at first anyway. The real diagnostic starting point is simpler: figure out whether the connection is wired or wireless, because the checks that follow are different for each (MacObserver, last year).

Tucked inside CarPlay's Accessibility menu are three tools: Voice Control, Sound Recognition, and a set of display adjustments covering text size, boldness, and color. These count among the hidden Apple CarPlay features that go unused simply because accessibility submenus rarely get opened without a specific reason to check them. None of them is a universal upgrade. Each solves a specific kind of friction for a specific kind of driver, and figuring out which one applies to you is the actual...

Wallpaper Engine isn't available on macOS. Its developers currently support Windows and Android and say they have no immediate plans for a Mac version.

NameDrop lets two iPhones, or an iPhone and Apple Watch, swap contact cards by holding the top edges close together and confirming a prompt that appears on both screens. It works by sharing contact information using AirDrop, and it's available now on any compatible iPhone running iOS 17.1 or later (Apple Support). This guide covers how to use NameDrop on iPhone step by step: which devices qualify, how to control exactly what gets shared, and what to check when the screen refuses to show up.

Safari looks almost the same after installing iOS 27. Open it, and the address bar, tab bar, and reading view sit right where they always have. But WIRED found that Apple tucked several new tools into Safari's menus, changes easy to miss if you're just scrolling through a webpage.

iOS 27 began rolling out on September 14, and it arrived with a screen most people may be tempted to tap through without reading: a prompt titled "Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence" offering two choices, "Share Audio and Text" or "Not Now."

iOS 27 now lets iPhone owners create their own Apple Wallet passes without a developer account.

Most CarPlay customization doesn't happen on the car's screen. App order and widgets are managed from the paired iPhone, while wallpaper, display appearance, text size and Smart Display Zoom are adjusted through CarPlay itself.

The Apple CarPlay settings worth changing after that first pairing live in two places: the iPhone's Settings app and CarPlay's own Settings app on the vehicle display.

Apple TV boxes don't use automatic content recognition to identify everything playing on a television, and an Apple TV 4K can't inspect video coming through the TV's other inputs. That gives the box a privacy advantage over many smart TVs and streaming platforms, as Ars Technica reported in 2025.

Scroll through a playlist and find half the tracks dimmed and unplayable, and the timing feels random: was it something you did, a subscription hiccup, or the label pulling the song outright? If you're searching for Apple Music songs grayed out how to fix, the troubleshooting path is more structured than the scattered advice online suggests. Apple's own Cloud Status labels, "Waiting," an exclamation mark, or "No Longer Available," point to different likely causes, and only some of them respond...

Open System Settings after installing macOS 27, and Apple Intelligence might be claiming far more space than Apple's own numbers suggest it should. That's the pattern surfacing on Mac forums this week: multiple owners running Apple's newest macOS release are seeing Apple Intelligence storage usage on Mac systems run well past what Apple's support documentation lists as the requirement. MacRumors measured 20.67GB on its own M4 Pro Mac mini, already above Apple's published 14GB ceiling for that...

A Messages background isn't a private wallpaper choice. It's a setting tied to the conversation itself: everyone in the thread sees whatever background gets applied, and anyone in that thread can change it again later (Apple Support). Learning how to change iMessage background on iPhone only takes a few taps, but knowing who else it affects matters more than the taps themselves.

An old Mac mini doesn't have to end up in a drawer once a newer model takes over your desk. Turning an old Mac mini into a home server is one of the more practical uses for hardware that's small, quiet, and easy to tuck away where noise and space matter.

This guide walks through how to use Visual Intelligence on macOS Golden Gate: what your Mac needs before turning it on, the keyboard shortcuts that trigger it, the in-app option built into Siri's systemwide context menus, and which questions are actually worth asking it.

If you mostly use Apple Podcasts to press play and nothing else, there's a handful of useful controls sitting untouched: a library that actually surfaces what you want to hear, playback settings you won't have to hunt for every session, chapter and timestamp navigation for long episodes, and syncing that's supposed to carry your spot across every Apple device you own.

iOS 27 shipped Sept. 14 with a redesigned Siri, but one of its most useful AI features lives inside the Shortcuts app. Describe a Shortcut lets you type what you want in plain language and have Apple Intelligence assemble the actions for you instead of building a workflow one step at a time.

Most Mac users assume the system language is all-or-nothing: change it, and everything from Finder to your third-party apps follows along. That's not quite right. macOS has a dedicated setting for how to change language for individual apps on Mac, letting you override one app's display language while leaving the rest of the system exactly as it was.

iOS 27 gives Find My something it has never had: a way to pause your location for one specific person without sending them any alert. That closes the long-standing gap between sharing everything and stopping sharing and hoping nobody notices.

To stop CarPlay from automatically connecting, turn off the per-car toggle if the iPhone shows one for that vehicle. Use the Screen Time restriction when the goal is blocking CarPlay everywhere, across every paired car at once. Reach for Forget This Car only when a full re-pairing is acceptable, since that's the method Apple's own support page walks through for CarPlay.

A newer iPhone can text emergency services from a trailhead with zero bars, but that capability isn't something you switch on in advance. It becomes available when you're off-grid and a normal call or text to emergency services can't connect, as long as you're outdoors with a clear view of the sky and using an iPhone 14 or later.

Apple calls Finder the home base of the Mac: the tool for organizing and reaching almost everything on the system, from documents to a connected iPhone. Most people use about a tenth of it. This collection of Finder tips and tricks for Mac users covers the rest: the browsing, previewing, editing, and search tools sitting in the same window you already open dozens of times a day.

The word "reset" gets stretched to cover three unrelated jobs when an Apple TV remote acts up, and that stretching is where most of the confusion starts. Learning how to reset an Apple TV remote really means figuring out which of three things applies: restarting a frozen remote, re-pairing one that's lost its Bluetooth connection, or wiping the entire Apple TV back to factory settings. Only the last of those erases the Apple TV's data.

Firefox for iOS now has a built-in ad blocker. Mozilla shipped it off by default, though, and you can now enable the feature from the app's main settings or the Site menu on a webpage. If you're trying to figure out how to enable ad blocker in Firefox on iPhone, the process itself is short. What takes longer to explain is what the feature actually filters once it's on, and where it stops.

In late January 2026, Banjo: Recompiled launched for Windows, Mac, and Linux as a standalone native app. Not an emulated N64 game running inside a simulated console, but its own application, built with remappable controls, a second-stick camera option, and mod support. It's one entry in a growing scene that lets players play classic console games natively on Mac without touching an emulator.

Apple took away the iPad's old job. It can no longer act as a Home hub; that role now sits strictly with HomePod and Apple TV. A small independent app called HomeDeck bets there's still a use for a spare iPad in a smart home: not as the brain, but as a HomeKit dashboard for iPad that displays an Apple Home someone has already built out. HomeDeck's own pitch is a dedicated screen, not a replacement for the hub sitting underneath it.

Every Mac includes Preview, Apple's app for opening PDFs and images. Double-click a supported file, and it will usually open without another download, subscription, or setup process.

iOS 27 doesn't reinvent CarPlay. What it does is remove friction, the kind you encounter every single drive. Reaching playback controls from the wrong screen, repeating yourself to Siri, asking for directions without being able to specify "avoid toll roads."
