Apple Sports App Hits CarPlay But Missing Key Feature

"Apple Sports App Hits CarPlay But Missing Key Feature" cover image

Apple's Sports app finally made its way to CarPlay with iOS 18.4. Great, right? Not quite. While Apple introduced a dedicated sports mode that lets live scores sit next to navigation and music, the new iOS widget trick does not carry over to CarPlay. So your phone feels cohesive, your dashboard does not.

For now, fans will have to lean on the dedicated sports mode for live updates, a decent compromise for halftime, red lights, or when someone else is riding shotgun. The appetite is clearly there, especially when Apple's data shows CarPlay is in 98% of new US cars and used over 600 million times daily. That is a lot of dashboards left waiting.

Will Apple bridge the widget gap or keep sports info corralled for safety? Given the company's track record and the research on driver distraction, do not expect always visible sports widgets anytime soon. Apple seems intent on purposeful, in-the-moment interactions rather than constant streams that tug at your eyes, a stance that may irk fans during kickoff, tip-off, or the ninth inning, but one that fits a responsible approach to in-car tech.

Apple's iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 updates are packed with new features, and you can try them before almost everyone else. First, check our list of supported iPhone and iPad models, then follow our step-by-step guide to install the iOS/iPadOS 26 beta — no paid developer account required.
