Apple's iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 updates include a new menu just for screenshots and screen recordings, finally giving users some control over how they capture their screens.
With the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 software, currently in beta, there's a new "Screen Capture" menu in Settings » General. In it, you can switch the screenshot interface, enable or disable visual intelligence in screenshots, turn CarPlay screenshots on or off (finally!), and change the format screenshots and screen recordings use.
Full-Screen Previews
When on, it displays screenshots in full view instead of showing a temporary thumbnail in the lower-left corner. On iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, you only get the thumbnail option.
Automatic Visual Look Up
When on, automatically identify and learn about objects and places that appear in your screenshot using visual intelligence. Visual Look Up in screenshots is only available on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence.
CarPlay Screenshots
When on, you can capture screenshots from car display screens. This is only available on iPhones. On iOS 18, an iPhone screenshot always takes a CarPlay screenshot when connected to the CarPlay vehicle.
Format
You can choose between two options, which are available on both iPhone and iPad:
HDR: When selected, your iPhone or iPad captures screenshots with full dynamic range in HEIF format and screen recordings in HEVC HDR10.
SDR (Most Compatible): When selected, your iPhone or iPad captures screenshots in PNG format and screen recordings in HEVC.
Neither option is available on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, where screenshots are stuck as PNGs and screen recordings miss out on HDR10.

Note: iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are currently available as developer betas (which anyone can join). The public betas will be released sometime in July, and the stable releases are expected in the fall.
