Apple TV boxes don't use automatic content recognition to identify everything playing on a television, and an Apple TV 4K can't inspect video coming through the TV's other inputs. That gives the box a privacy advantage over many smart TVs and streaming platforms, as Ars Technica reported in 2025.
That doesn't eliminate app tracking, optional diagnostics, Siri data handling, or the viewing history Apple uses to personalize the Apple TV app. Those controls live in separate menus, so there isn't one master privacy switch that shuts everything down.
The paths below match Apple's current tvOS 27 documentation for supported Apple TV 4K models. Apple released tvOS 27 on Sept. 14 for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later, so older hardware may still show earlier menu labels.
Apple TV privacy settings: start with these low-impact changes
Step 1: Turn off app tracking requests.
Path: Go to Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Tracking, then turn off Allow Apps to Ask to Track.
What it limits: Apps are prevented from requesting permission to track your activity across apps and websites owned by other companies for advertising, ad measurement, or sharing with data brokers.
What it doesn't change: A streaming app can still use activity collected inside its own service as first-party data.
Apple says an app denied permission can't access the system advertising identifier, or IDFA, and isn't permitted to substitute another identifier such as an email address for the same cross-company tracking purpose.
If you previously allowed individual apps to track you, the Tracking menu also lets you revoke those permissions one by one.
Step 2: Turn off optional analytics sharing.
Path: Go to Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
Turn off Share Apple TV Analytics.
Turn off Share with App Developers.
What it limits: Optional analytics sent to Apple and participating app developers.
What it doesn't change: It does not erase Apple TV app viewing history, purchases, searches, or other data collected to provide the service.
Apple describes both analytics settings as optional in its current Apple TV privacy guide.
Siri and app permissions
Step 3: Leave Improve Siri & Dictation off.
Path: Go to Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation.
What it limits: Apple won't store and review samples of your Siri audio under the optional improvement program.
What it doesn't change: Siri still needs to process requests, and Apple can retain transcripts and related request data.
Apple's current Siri privacy documentation says that, unless you opt in to Improve Siri & Dictation, Siri audio sent to Apple for processing is not stored.
Transcripts and related request information are treated differently. Apple says that request history is associated with a random identifier that rotates multiple times per hour rather than with your Apple Account, and it may be retained and used for up to two years. A small subset of reviewed interactions can be kept longer.
Turning off Improve Siri & Dictation therefore limits optional audio storage and review. It does not mean every piece of Siri request data disappears immediately.
There's also a separate cleanup control. Go to Settings > General > Siri > Siri & Dictation History to delete Siri and dictation history associated with that Apple TV from Apple's servers.
Step 4: Review app permissions.
Go to Settings > General > Privacy & Security and work through the access categories listed there.
Apple currently includes controls for:
Location Services
Photos
Bluetooth
Microphone
Camera
Apple Home
Media & Apple Music
Each category shows apps that have requested access and lets you adjust those permissions.
This is better treated as a recurring check than a one-time setup step. Installing a new app can introduce a new permission request later.
Don't revoke a permission blindly if you rely on a feature that needs it. A video-calling app, for example, won't be able to use a microphone you've blocked.
Limit what the Apple TV app remembers
The last three controls deal specifically with data inside the Apple TV app: what influences personalization, what's already in your viewing history, and what participating third-party streaming apps share with Apple.
Step 5: Turn off Use Play History if you don't want viewing activity feeding personalization.
Path: Go to Settings > Apps > TV > Use Play History and turn it off.
What it limits: Apple stops using what you watch on that device for personalized Apple TV app recommendations.
What it doesn't change: It doesn't erase the viewing history Apple already holds.
Apple's Apple TV app privacy policy says it collects information about purchases, downloads, searches, browsing, subscriptions and what you watch in the Apple TV app and connected apps.
That data helps power features such as personalized recommendations and continuity across devices.
Apple may also use location, if you've allowed the TV app to access it, to determine locally available content and serve geographically relevant advertising.
Turning off Use Play History limits the personalization use of new viewing activity. It isn't a blanket stop on every type of Apple TV app data collection.
Step 6: Clear Play History if you also want to remove earlier viewing activity.
Path: Go to Settings > Apps > TV > Clear Play History.
What it limits: Apple disassociates past playback history from your account for the Apple TV app across devices using the same Apple Account.
Trade-off: It also removes shows and movies from your Continue Watching and Watchlist rows.
This is broader than turning off Use Play History.
Apple says clearing play history removes the Apple-held viewing information used by the TV app, including play data collected from connected third-party services.
It doesn't necessarily erase every record Apple has. Apple says it can retain some playback records from Apple TV channels and Apple TV subscriptions for reporting and royalty requirements.
It also doesn't delete viewing history kept independently by Netflix, Disney+, Max, or another streaming provider.
Step 7: Disconnect individual streaming apps you don't want sharing playback with Apple.
Path: Go to Settings > Apps > TV > Connect to TV.
Select a connected third-party app.
Turn off its connection, or choose Remove and Clear Play History if you also want Apple to delete the play data it collected from that service.
Participating streaming apps must get permission before sharing what you watch with the Apple TV app.
Once an app is disconnected, Apple says it stops collecting new play data from that third-party service.
Choosing Remove and Clear Play History also deletes the related third-party viewing data held by Apple for the TV app.
It does not delete whatever viewing history the streaming company keeps in its own account or servers.
Where to start
Steps 1 and 2 are the easiest first changes. Turning off app tracking requests limits cross-company tracking, while disabling analytics stops optional diagnostic sharing without affecting playback quality.
Step 3 is the main Siri privacy control if you don't want Apple storing and reviewing audio samples for product improvement. If you also want to clear existing Siri history associated with the box, use the separate Siri & Dictation History control.
Review Step 4 whenever you install new apps.
Steps 5 through 7 involve more visible trade-offs. Turning off Use Play History reduces personalization, clearing history also removes Continue Watching and Watchlist entries, and disconnecting a streaming app can reduce how well that service integrates with the Apple TV app.
Apple TV's lack of automatic content recognition remains an important distinction from many smart TVs. The privacy settings above cover the data the box and its apps can still collect through ordinary use, and tvOS 27 keeps those controls separate rather than hiding them behind a single all-or-nothing switch.
