Beta code inside tvOS 27 and Bloomberg reporting suggest Apple is preparing Siri AI for the Apple TV ecosystem, but neither source confirms which existing models will support it. Whether the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K will run the redesigned assistant, or whether it's reserved for hardware Apple hasn't announced yet, remains an open question.
This isn't the first time Apple has left Apple TV out of a Siri AI conversation. At WWDC in June, Apple announced its overhauled assistant for every major platform except two: Apple TV and HomePod. tvOS 27, expected this fall, adds another wrinkle: it won't install at all on the Apple TV HD or the first-generation Apple TV 4K.
Taken together, those two facts point to new hardware as the likely launch vehicle for Siri AI. Apple hasn't said whether that means today's Apple TV 4K models get excluded too. More recent tvOS 27 code findings strengthen the case that Siri AI is being prepared for Apple TV without answering the hardware-eligibility question.
What tvOS 27's code, and Apple's own delay, reveal
Macworld's Filipe Espósito found code in the second tvOS 27 developer beta, tied to the HomePod setup flow, referencing Apple's next-generation Siri experience powered by Apple Intelligence. The code doesn't reveal exactly how the features will work, but it indicates Apple is actively preparing tvOS and HomePod software for Siri AI integration.
A later August finding added another clue: tvOS 27's Device Hub app list includes a new Siri entry carrying com.apple.campo, a string tied in prior reporting to Apple's next-generation Siri project. The entry isn't enabled, and the finding still doesn't establish whether existing Apple TV hardware will support it.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported, as relayed by MacRumors, that a new Apple TV 4K, new Home hardware, and Apple's rumored home hub are tied to the same Siri AI launch window. That reporting also links their delayed arrival to Siri AI's own readiness problems: Apple had intended to debut the Apple Intelligence-powered assistant in spring 2026 before pushing it to iOS 27 this fall.
The harder question is how Siri AI would actually run on a television. Code references have linked an unannounced Apple TV to the A17 Pro chip, the oldest iPhone-class chip capable of supporting Apple Intelligence, pointing to hardware capable of on-device AI processing.
Apple TV and HomePod software also share the same underlying codebase, one that reporting suggests will extend to Apple's broader home-device lineup. But that shared software foundation doesn't establish that another home device could handle Apple Intelligence processing on behalf of an older Apple TV.
That's the central unresolved question here. If Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence-capable hardware inside the Apple TV itself, the current A12- and A15-based models could face hardware limitations. If Apple uses a different processing model for its home products, compatibility could be broader. Nothing Apple has published yet settles that question.
tvOS 27 compatibility and what it means for current Apple TV owners
Apple TV HD and the first-generation Apple TV 4K will not support tvOS 27 at all. Those owners need newer hardware to get the update, regardless of what happens with Siri AI, according to 9to5Mac.
The second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K are confirmed to support tvOS 27. Apple has already published that compatibility boundary, so their ability to run the operating system itself is no longer in question.
What remains unclear is whether Siri AI's headline features will switch on for either existing model.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. Getting tvOS 27 and getting Siri AI are not the same guarantee. A device could receive the software update, along with whatever general improvements ship alongside it, without unlocking AI-driven Siri features tied to newer hardware.
Apple has drawn that same line before, with iPhone and iPad models that run the latest iOS or iPadOS while sitting outside Apple Intelligence eligibility. Nothing in current reporting rules out the same split happening on tvOS.
Apple has already raised prices on the current Apple TV 4K, from $129 to $199 for the 64GB model and from $149 to $249 for the 128GB Ethernet version. The increase lands on a product line due for its first hardware refresh in nearly four years.
Refurbished units offer a cheaper way in. At the time of 9to5Mac's August reporting, Apple listed the refurbished 64GB model at $169 and the 128GB Ethernet model at $209.
What the rumored new Apple TV 4K could add
The next Apple TV 4K isn't just a Siri story. It's expected to adopt Apple's N1 wireless chip, which could bring Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and broader Thread support, a meaningful jump from today's Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, with Thread currently limited to the pricier Ethernet configuration.
An updated Siri Remote also appears to be coming. Code found in macOS 26.7 references an unreleased Apple TV remote, adding evidence to earlier reporting that the next Apple TV could ship with a tweaked controller.
What that remote changes remains unknown. Ultra Wideband support for Precision Finding has been suggested as a desirable addition, but current reporting does not establish that Apple actually plans to include it.
What Apple still needs to clarify
Several threads of reporting now point in the same general direction without resolving the central question. Beta code shows Apple preparing tvOS and HomePod software for Siri AI. Later August code added a Siri AI-related entry directly to tvOS 27, while separate iOS 27 findings exposed Apple Intelligence reporting controls for Apple TV and HomePod.
Bloomberg-linked reporting ties that broader home-device push to new Apple TV and other Home hardware. None of it confirms whether Siri AI will run, in any form, on the second- or third-generation Apple TV 4K models already sitting in living rooms.
Apple also hasn't said what the feature would actually do once it's there, whether that's smarter content search, contextual playback control, expanded smart-home commands, or something not yet reported at all.
Apple has now officially scheduled its next product event for September 9. A new Apple TV 4K is rumored as a possible launch for that event, but Apple has not included the product in any announced agenda or confirmed that Siri AI for Apple TV will be unveiled there.
Until it does, the compatibility question raised by tvOS 27's beta code, and the gap between receiving the software update and receiving the AI features tied to it, stays open for anyone deciding whether to buy, hold, or wait.
